Wings Win in OT Thriller

Dec 9, 2015

The Aberdeen Wings hosted a rare mid-week game on Wednesday night as the in state rival Brookings Blizzard came to the Odde looking for revenge.  The last time the two teams met was just 2 weeks ago when the Wings and goaltender Peter Thome shut out the Blizzard 4-0.  The Wings were ready and waiting though and came out firing.  In a period that would end with them leading in shots on goal 17-7 the Wings also had the best scoring chances.  Tucker DeYoung was able to capitalize on a sharp angle shot just 3:36 into the first to put the Wings up 1-0.  Assisting on the DeYoung goal was Ryan Cook and goaltender Peter Thome.  Brookings would answer, and that would be a trend throughout the evening.  Aberdeen wasn’t finished though as Will Hammer would give the Wings a 2-1 lead heading into the locker room on a nice tic tac toe passing play on the power play.  Assisting were Carter Roo and Tucker DeYoung.  Brookings would answer midway through the 2nd to keep the game tied heading into the 3rd period.  Andrew Noel would but the Wings back on top on the power play late in the 3rd with Jake Leitner assisting.  With less than 2 min left in the game Brookings would get their own power play goal to send the game into overtime.  2 minutes into the overtime period Jackson Graalum had an innocent poke check that knocked the puck to Carter Roo, who started a break out and was able to backhand one over to Graalum who used his speed to beat both Blizzard defenders and ripped one past the Brookings goaltender to give the Wings a 4-3 overtime win.  Thome was great in net again stopping 36 of the 39 shots he faced.  Aberdeen was 2 for 3 on the power play.  Both teams ended with 39 shots on goal.
