The Aberdeen Wings were on the ice at ‘The Odde’ on Saturday night, after a long delay due to travel complications by the Minot Minotauros. Originally set for a 7:15pm puck drop, the game was delayed as the Wings organization allowed the Minotauros the needed time to warm-up and prepare. The game started around 8:30pm. But the nearly 1,400 fans still showed up in force.
The first period saw both teams skating fast. The Aberdeen Wings shutout Minot on the road back in October for back-to-back 3-0 wins. But of recently, after Minot hit the transaction wire acquiring three former Wings, Aberdeen has had trouble battling the Minotauros. Last weekend, the Wings were swept on the road by Minot. Last night the Wings dropped another game in Minot 2-1 in overtime. Throughout the first period, the Wings played physical in front of their home crowd but would not muster a goal, neither would Minot. 0-0 after one period.
In the second, the play would get much more physical as Wings forward #8 Drew Doyon (F-Indianapolis, IN) would square off with a Minot player. After Doyon delivered three jabs the two would go to the ice. The scoring would also pick up in the second. At the 12:35 mark Wings forward #16 Kyle Haak (F-Okemos, MI) would find the back of the net thanks to assists from #11 TJ Roo (F-Coon Rapids, MN) and #15 Jordan Heller (F-Bemidji, MN). After a boarding call, Aberdeen would go on a 5:00 penalty kill where Minot would score on a goal from Jacob Howie. But with the final seconds of the period winding down, Wings forward #24 Jonathan Grebosky (F-Pittsburgh, PA) would chip it in with one second remaining. The assists coming from #4 Jake Horton (D-Plymouth, MN) and #27 Erik Baskin (F-Minnetonka, MN). 2-1 after two periods.
Right at the start of the third period, Minot would score courtesy of Scott Dornbrock. Tied at 2-2, with less than one minute left Wings defenseman Jake Horton would blast a shot literally from the blue line and score putting the Wings up 3-2. A good effort by Minot to tie it up would come up short and the Aberdeen Wings would get their 15th win of the season.
