Wings Host Minot This Weekend

Jan 15, 2015

The Aberdeen Wings have had struggles throughout the season. But since the return from the Christmas break, the Wings have been 3-2-0 with home wins against the Brookings Blizzard and the Minnesota Magicians. But the home stand this weekend against the Minot Minotauros could mean playing the spoiler for the NAHL Central Division leader.

The Minot Minotauros have been the best team on the road in the NAHL since the 2008-2009 Topeka Roadrunners who won 14 games in a row. The Minotauros currently sit at 13 straight wins.

The Topeka Roadrunners who set the record of 14 straight road wins was led by Jordan George, who ended the season with 27 goals and 40 assists. He went on to have a very successful collegiate career at Bemidji State University for the Beavers hockey program. The goaltender for the Roadrunners was Bryce Merriman who continued to have a great college career and played in the ECHL, the ‘AA’ level of professional hockey.

What could it mean by the Wings halting this record?

The Aberdeen Wings have been 3-4-0 so far this season against the Minot Minotauros. The Wings ended last season 7-4-1 against the Minotauros. A few key players for the Wings this weekend could be captain #16 Kyle Haak (F-Okemos, MI) who has scored 4 goals and 9 assists in his career against Minot. Forward #21 Bjorn Sigurdarson (F-Reykjavik, Iceland) has also shined against Minot scoring 5 goals and 3 assists in just one and a half seasons. Other notables include #13 Michael Soucier (F-Caledon, Ontario) who has scored 3 goals and 2 assists and #8 Drew Doyon (F-Indianapolis, IN) with 2 goals and 3 assists. Wings forward #19 Colin O’Neill (F-Odenton, MD) has scored 7 assists in his career against Minot.

From this time in the 2013-2014 season to the end of the year, the Wings finished 17-6-2 including an 11-game winning streak.
