Wings Fall To Johnstown 3-2

The official start of the 2014-2015 NAHL season for the Aberdeen Wings was Wednesday afternoon. However, the Wings would fall in the season opener to the Johnstown Tomahawks 3-2.

The Wings had a couple of great early opportunities to score, but couldn’t find the back of the net. It was the Johnstown Tomahawks to light up the net in the first period with a goal at 14:23 from Andrew Romano. The goal would be the only scoring in the first period.

In the second, play remained the same as both teams couldn’t develop a solid scoring opportunity. Early in the 2nd period, Wings forward #17 Will Hammer (F-St. Cloud, MN) would be called for tripping. On the power play, Johnstown again would score at 4:35 with a goal from Alex Jaeckle. After two, the score was 2-0.

In the third period, Wings forward #21 Bjorn Sigurdarson (F-Reykjavik, Iceland) would go to the penalty box for hooking. Seconds later, Johnstown would hammer their 3rd goal of the game. Scoring was Zach Zech for the Tomahawks making it 3-0. Nearly half a minute later, the Wings would finally get on the board with a goal from #16 Kyle Haak (F-Okemos, MI), assists from #24 Ronnie Hein (F-Chelsea, MI) and #20 Jack Nile (F-Lisle, IL). Johnstown Tomahawks forward Tanner Barnes would go to the penalty box at 15:33 for slashing, but after three great scoring attempts the Wings would not be able to get another. The Wings would get another shot at the power play after Johnstown would get a 10 minute misconduct. At 18:16, Wings rookie forward #24 Ronnie Hein would get the goal with an assist from #21 Bjorn Sigurdarson making it 3-2. Despite a charge in the final seconds, the Wings would come up short in the season opener, 3-2 to the Johnstown Tomahawks at the NAHL Showcase Tournament in Blaine, Minnesota. Wings goaltender #1 Chad Catt (G-Williamstown, MI) stopped 16 of 19 shots.
