NAHL announces Bauer Hockey Divisional Stars of the Week

JANUARY 28, 2019

The North American Hockey League (NAHL) today announced the Divisional Stars of the Week presented by Bauer Hockey for the week ending January 27, 2019.  The Divisional Stars of the Week is a weekly feature during the 2018-19 regular season that honors the top performing players in each of the four NAHL divisions. Only players that are nominated by their respective teams are considered for the Divisional Players of the Week award.

Central Division Star of the Week: Brad Belisle, forward, Aberdeen Wings

Another weekend and another series win for the Aberdeen Wings, who ran their winning streak to an NAHL season-high 18 straight games with two more wins this past weekend at home against the Austin Bruins. Forward and Bemidji State recruit Brad Belisle, 21, had a huge weekend, as the Wings leading scorer racked up six points (4 goals, 2 assists) and was a +5 in the two wins. On Friday, the 6’1/195 lbs. native of Thunder Bay, Ontario had a hat-trick and an assist in a 5-1 win, and then on Saturday, he had a goal and an assist in a 3-2 shootout win. For the season, Belisle currently leads all Wings players with 43 points in 38 games played. “Brad’s maturity as a player and a person makes him heavily relied on in all situations, including leadership. He is a team-first type of individual and puts his teammates before himself. Brad has been one of the most consistent players this year, and this weekend was no different,” said Wings head coach Scott Langer.

East Division Star of the Week: Gavin Gulash, forward, New Jersey Titans

New Jersey Titans forward Gavin Gulash, 20, helped his club to a weekend home-and-home sweep of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights this past weekend with four points (3 goals, 1 assists) in two wins. The 6’2/190 lbs. native of Red Bank, New Jersey, had a goal and an assist in a 5-4 win on Friday, and followed that up with two goals, including the game-winner, in a 5-3 home win on Saturday. Gulash, who is an NAPHL grad, is currently tied for 4th in team scoring so far this season with 25 points in 39 games played. “Gavin was a consistent offensive force along with his line mates Zach Nazzarett and Ryan Naumovski. Gavin was able to produce in both wins and was a critical part of our success off the rush and in the zone.  Gavin is an NCAA Division 1 hockey player who continued to grow and develop day to day. Gavin is a model of growth within our program. From his development in NAPHL as a Titan to his role on our NAHL club we couldn’t be more happy and proud of Gavin.  We look forward to him being a big part of our Robertson Cup chase,” said Titans head coach Craig Doremus.

Midwest Division Star of the Week: Ben Schmidling, forward, Springfield Jr. Blues

Springfield Jr. Blues forward Ben Schmidling, 20, helped his club to a weekend home split with the Janesville Jets. The 5’10/172 lbs. native of St. Joseph, Missouri, put up three goals in the two games, which helped the Jr. Blues stay solidly in a playoff spot in the Midwest Division. On Friday, Schmidling scored two goals in a 4-2 win, and then on Saturday, he added another goal in a 4-2 loss. For the season, Schmidling is 2nd in team scoring with 35 points in 38 games played. “Ben has been hot for us lately. He is committed to being a leader in and off the ice for us in the second half and it has shown the last couple of weeks,” said Jr. Blues head coach Tyler Rennette.

South Division Star of the Week: CJ Regula, defenseman, Shreveport Mudbugs

The Shreveport Mudbugs moved themselves into sole possession of 2nd place in the South Division with a 3-0 record this past week. Defenseman CJ Regula, 20, was a major factor in all three wins as the native of West Bloomfield, Michigan, recorded seven points (1 goal, 6 assists) and was also a +6. On Monday, Regula (6’3/200) had three assists in Shreveport’s 6-3 road win at Lone Star. On Friday night, he picked up an assist in a 3-0 shutout of the Topeka Pilots, and then on Saturday, he had a goal and two assists in an 8-2 win over the Pilots. For the season, Regula is 5th in team scoring this year with 25 points in 31 games played. “We feel CJ is really coming along well since joining the Mudbugs. He’s been feeling more comfortable and confident on the ice and his performance this past week has been a reflection of that. He’s been poised with puck, making heads up simple plays and moving his feet well.  This little taste of success is attributed not only to his consistent play, but also that of his teammates,” said Mudbugs head coach Jason Campbell.
