Baskin leads Wings to 5-1 win

The Wings completed the sweep over the weekend against the Brookings Blizzard winning 5-3 and 5-1.

Friday night, the Aberdeen Wings (3-1-0) would take on the Brookings Blizzard on the road. In the first period the Wings would get a goal from European import #25 Lennart Palausch (F-Mannheim, Germany) with assists from #21 Bjorn Sigurdarson (F-Reykjavik, Iceland) and #2 Ryan Cook (D-Buffalo, NY). Entering the 2nd period up 1-0, Aberdeen would jump on Brookings a few minutes with an unassisted goal from #24 Jonathan Grebosky (F-Pittsburgh, PA) and a powerplay goal from Wings defenseman #4 Jake Horton (D-Plymouth, MN) putting the Wings up 3-0. Assists on the powerplay goal would come from #20 Dillon Eichstadt (Bemidji, MN) and #21 Bjorn Sigurdarson. But Brookings would answer back with two goals making it 3-2 at the end of the 2nd. Two minutes into the 3rd period, Wings defenseman Matt Brettingen (D-St. Cloud, MN) would score off the assists from #21 Bjorn Sigurdarson and #25 Lennart Palausch. Brookings would get another goal late in the 3rd making it 4-3, but Aberdeen would get the final goal from center #15 Jordan Heller (C-Bemidji, MN) making the final 5-3. Wings goalie Henry Dill would get his 3rd win stopping 27 of 30 shots.

On Saturday night, the Wings held their home opener with over 1,500 fans in attendance. The Odde was loud and rocking as the team hit the ice. The intensity wouldn't slip away either, as rookie forward #18 Austin Swingle (F-Sartell, MN) scored just about half way through the first. Picking up the assists were #9 Patrick Steinhauser (F-Plymouth, MN) and Emil Blomqvist (F-Lulea, Sweden). The 2nd period would have multiple penalties for both sides, but also a lot of scoring. At the 8:48 mark, with the Wings on a powerplay, veteran defender #4 Jake Horton (D-Plymouth, MN) would score putting the Wings up 2-0. Assists were given to #20 Dillon Eichstadt (D-Bemidji, MN) and #21 Bjorn Sigurdarson (F-Reykjavik, Iceland). Again on the powerplay, #11 TJ Roo (F-Coon Rapids, MN) would score with the assist from #21 Bjorn Sigurdarson. Brookings would get on the board in the 2nd with their own powerplay goal from #13 Evan Hesse. But Aberdeen would not back down as #27 Erik Baskin (F-Excelsior, MN) would make a move on a Blizzard defender and put one in the back of the net at the 15:55 mark. Assists would come from #20 Dillon Eichstadt and #24 Jonathan Grebosky (F-Pittsburgh, PA). In the 3rd period Baskin would score again off an assist from Grebosky and the Wings would win 5-1. Aberdeen outshot the Blizzard 44-37 while Wings goalie Chad Catt would get his 2nd win of the season stopping 36 of 37 shots.

The Aberdeen Wings improve to 5-1-0 this season and will host the Bismarck Bobcats on Friday, October 4th at the Odde Ice Center in Aberdeen, SD.
