Wings Clinch Playoff Spot

The Aberdeen Wings have been on a roll of late, winning their last 5 games. Through six games so far in February, the Wings are 5-1 after a devastating 3-0 shutout loss to the Minnesota Wilderness on the 1st.

As the Wings downed Minot 3-2 at home last Saturday, the team clinched a spot in the playoffs. Over the past four home wins, the Odde Ice Center has been rocking with excitement thanks to the 5,744 Wings fans who have attended.

In February alone, the Aberdeen Wings have seen outstanding performances from the veterans and rookies both. For the month, so far, 17 Wings players have scored a point in a game. Aberdeen has outscored their opponents 20-12. Wings goaltender #30 Henry Dill (G-Columbus, OH) stepped in on February 6th after Minot scored three goals in the first period on the Wings starting goaltender. Dill was placed in the game during the 1st intermission and has been hot ever since. 5-0 now in his last 5 games, Dill tallied a 1.28 goals against average after stopping 109 of 115 shots for a 95% save percentage.

Other notable February performers:

Wings forward #8 Drew Doyon (F-Indianapolis, IN) has been hot so far this month scoring two goals and two assists. Forward #9 Pat Steinhauser (F-Plymouth, MN) has also played well with two goals and an assist. #22 Zach Doerring (F-Chanhassen, MN) has tallied three assists this month. Doerring was acquired in a trade with the Coulee Region Chill last season and so far in 2013-2014 he has compiled 3 goals and 10 assists for 13 points.

This week the top prospects of each division who have not made a college commitment will compete in round robin play in Troy, Michigan in front of many college and professional scouts. Named to the NAHL Central team were Wings defensemen #4 Jake Horton (D-Plymouth, MN) and #20 Dillon Eichstadt (D-Bemidji, MN), also forwards #24 Jonathan Grebosky (F-Pittsburgh, PA) and #17 Davis DeKorte (F-DeWitt, MI). DeKorte will represent the NAHL North team as he was acquired in a trade from the Springfield Jr. Blues after the Top Prospects selections were made. February has been kind to those Wings players going to the tournament as Horton has put up big numbers including 3 goals and 2 assists. Grebosky has been one of the hottest Wings players of late with three goals and 4 assists in the last 5 games.

For those Wings players already with college commitments, they’ve had a big month so far too. Wings forward #27 Erik Baskin (F-Minnetonka, MN) who committed to Air Force has scored two goals and two assists this month, 14 goals and 11 assists for the season. Bemidji State University commits #15 Jordan Heller (F-Bemidji, MN) and #11 TJ Roo (F-Coon Rapids, MN) are line-mates for the Wings, scoring a combine 4 goals and 8 assists this month. UMASS-Lowell commit #19 Colin O’Neill (Odenton, MD) also pitched in with 3 assists in the past 5 games.

#16 Kyle Haak (F-Okemos, MI) has been great the past two weeks as well putting up 2 goals and 2 assists. Rookie defenseman #3 Daniel Billett (D-Highlands Ranch, CO) also added 3 assists in the past 5 games.
