Wings blow away Blizzard in shootout

Feb 22, 2013

The Aberdeen Wings started slowly but finished strong and sent a packed house at the Odde Ice Center home happy with a 5-4 shootout victory over the Brookings Blizzard.

The Wings trailed 4-1 late in the third period before scoring three times in a span of a minute and 16 seconds to force overtime. After a scoreless overtime, Justin Parizek and Eric Baskin scored in the shootout, giving the Wings the victory.

A pair of Brookings goals in the second period gave the visitors a 4-1 cushion heading into the third. Baskin’s shorthanded goal with 1:16 left started the Aberdeen rally. Jake Horton found the net with 14 seconds left to get the Wings to within a goal, and Jordan Heller scored with 1.6 seconds remaining to tie the game.  Baskin finished with a pair of goals for the Wings, scoring his team’s first goal as well, trimming the Brookings lead to 2-1 in the first period. Each team was 0-6 on power play chances and the visitors had a 49-40 edge in shots.

Aberdeen improved to 13-28-7 with the victory, while Brookings fell to 27-18-4 with the loss. The Wings will begin March with a road trip to Austin, Minn., to face the Bruins next Friday and Saturday.
