Aberdeen rips Brookings, 5-1
The Aberdeen Wings had a two-goal lead after two periods and cruised the rest of the way en route to a 5-1 win over the Brookings Blizzard.
Aberdeen was led by goalie Chad Catt, who finished with 46 saves while allowing one goal. Catt certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 2.73 entering the contest.
Brookings was doomed by its poor performance on special teams, as the Wings were able to score four times while on the power play.
Aberdeen’s penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on seven Brookings power plays. The Wings bested their season scoring average. Aberdeen averages 2.6 goals per game. The Wings put 41 shots on net during the contest, more than the 25.8 they average per game. Aberdeen could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 30 minutes in penalties during the game.
The Wings were helped by Zach Doerring, who had one goal. Doerring scored 7:06 into the first period to make the score 2-0 Aberdeen. Erik Baskin assisted on the tally. Aberdeen also got points from Baskin, who also registered one goal and one assist. Aberdeen also got a goal from Steven Johnson as well. More assists for Aberdeen came via Liam McGing, Kyle Haak, and Justin Parizek, who contributed one a piece and Jake Horton, Dylan Dailey, and Jonathan Grebosky, who each chipped in two.
The the Blizzard penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled nine minors and one major for 33 minutes in penalty time. Brookings surpassed its season average of 20.0 penalty minutes per game. The Blizzard forced Aberdeen goalie Catt to work between the pipes, taking 47 shots.
