Former Wings Player, KHL Draft Prospect

Feb 23, 2014

Many former Aberdeen Wings players are having great seasons whether it be in college hockey, NHL scouting reports, or even other junior hockey leagues.

For one former Aberdeen Wings defenseman, the next level was returning home to Austria to play his final year of junior hockey. Niklas Mayrhauser, now a defenseman with the EC Red Bull Salzburg farm team. The team is a major junior hockey team and farm club for the Red Bull Salzburg of the professional Austrian Hockey League.

Last season, Mayrhauser started the season as a member of the Fairbanks Ice Dogs of the NAHL. He was acquired by the Wings via trade prior to the Christmas break last season after playing 18 games for the Ice Dogs. With the Wings, Mayrhauser notched 4 assists in 16 games, +16 in the strong late season finish.

Now with the EC Red Bull Salzburg, Mayrhauser has tallied two goals and 11 assists in 37 games played. The Red Bull are 28-25-3 this season. With just a few games left, Mayrhauser and EC Red Bull Salzburg will fight for one of the last few playoff spots in search of the Kharlamov Cup. Mayrhauser will also look to be drafted this May into the KHL (Kontinental Hockey League), the professional hockey league in Russia.

The current Aberdeen Wings are in action this weekend against rival Bismarck Bobcats, Friday night at Bismarck and Saturday at home. General admission tickets are just $10, reserved seating $12. It’s COLLEGE NIGHT on Saturday, show your school ID at the ticket booth and get $2 off your admission.
